Urbygningen and Tårnbygningen at NMBU with a subtle digital data layer over the campus

Experiences from Smart Campus NMBU

Campus data that opens up possibilities.

Here we share experiences, methods and what we learn along the way in the Smart Campus NMBU project. The aim is to help more universities and colleges develop their own solutions for connected building data, better operations and more sustainable campus development.

Developing the data platform

A shared data foundation in development

The Smart Campus NMBU team is working to connect data from buildings, technical systems, sensors and other systems within a shared structure. The team has a foundation to build on, and work on connections and data quality continues.

The aim is to make data easier to understand and use across disciplines. The areas below show what the project team is working on and the possibilities the data foundation could enable.

Buildings and systems

Data on buildings and technical systems as a foundation for further work.

Energy

Energy use data and opportunities to connect information from different sources.

Room use

Bookings and recorded activity as a basis for investigating room use.

Indoor climate

Temperature and CO₂ considered alongside room use.

Research and learning

Opportunities to use campus data in research, learning and innovation.

Future possibilities

A foundation for more demand-led operations

Historical data and measurements can help us understand space use, energy consumption and service needs. Over time, this could provide a better basis for planning tasks and resources around actual needs.

Realising the benefits requires further development, testing and follow-up in practice. Data quality, context and professional judgement must underpin the work.

Energy use

Data on energy, room use and technical operations can provide a basis for investigating where measures may be appropriate.

Planning operations

A better understanding of use and needs can support the planning of tasks and resources.

Maintenance

Historical and operational data can help assess the need for follow-up and preventive maintenance.

Energy flexibility

Connected data can provide a basis for exploring how energy use could be adapted to capacity and demand.

SC Insight

SC Insight – from data foundation to practical use

SC Insight is a workspace under continued development. The project team has begun using it to investigate campus data and explore how analysis can support professional judgement in operations and development.

SC Insight and Admin are access-restricted services for staff and partners.
